A very smart person once said- that is you are feeling down about yourself, you need to stop, look around and help someone else. -- You wonder what is me helping them going to do about me feeling bad about my situation?
I don't know for sure- but it works like magic!!!
Service is a powerful thing. It can make you feel on top of the world-- the is addictive-- its like the best drug int he world!!
And for some reason - it miraculously makes your life seem bearable or maybe even corrects the problem all together-- I tell you its magic!!!
I decided this morning- I'd like to challenge people around me- mostly myself- but any one who is up for a good challenge- to find someone each day -- and serve them-- help them-- -- it can be easy - it can be simple- I promise you will feel soo good!!-- It can be as simple as helping a lady with a baby in her hands-- by opening her door! I can tell you one thing- it will effect her-- she will be greatful!!
Here are 3 stories-- 3 stories of service- related to me- that have made my day each time!!
1st story -- 2 weekends ago- I was going to make Jello for my nephews baby blessing the next day -- I needed to get the jello made before 3-- after 3 we were going to pick huckleberries-- so I was on some what of a time table.
I knew Porter was tired-- and I knew he'd fall asleep on the way to the store - he did- I figure I'd just wake him up and put him in the cart and he could go back to sleep on the way home-- he didn't way up- he was deep in sleep- and was at the floppy head point of his slumber-- he had a rough night the night before- up most of the night with a fever - teething-- and needed to sleep- so I leaned way over- so he could rest his head on me- and proceeded to get the few things I needed to complete my jello -- I was secretly hoping I'd run into someone in the parking lot I knew- or see someone as I pulled in that could maybe just sit in teh car with him while I ran in really quick- but no luck!!
So I shopped - as I'd lean for an item- I'd hold his head in my hand so it wouldn't smack on the cart-- I had my few things- and hurried to the check out-- then i didn't know how I'd get themout--
Luckily- there was the sweetest couple behind me-- I thought she was my aunt at first!!-- but she wasn't!
She told me-- I will get your things out- you are just so tenderly letting him sleep and letting him rest his head on you- let me help you- you are such a good mother- I about burst into tears!!! I allowed her to help me-- and she helped me put them back int eh cart too!! I couldn't thank her enough-- the small act of service made me feel good again- made me feel that in a world seemingly filled with child molesters, rapists and embezlers, that someone out there is still good!! Porter stayed alseep for another 2 hours-- he needed to rest!
2nd Story -- Friday night 2 cows ran through our yard and back down to the neighbors- I figured they were the neighbors and didn't worry to much about it. Yesterday (Sunday) 2 people on horse back rode past the house- then shortly came by again herding 2 cows down the road-- they were having trouble-- and I knew their pain-- as I sat unthawing a steak and marinating it for the bbq- of the stupid cows that I had chased so many sundays -- without help from passer bys- I told Chet to put on shoes we should go and help.
We did-- as the cows ran away and into the neighbors field- we waited at the intersection ready to block them from going back the way they came.
Then one guy ont eh horse came up out of the ditch and his horse fell- maybe breaking its ankle- unrideable!! Oh no!!!
We offered our horses- hehehe!! and offered to tie his horse up-- then Chet got the 4 wheeler- and herded the nasty cows back to our house- we had them penned in between equipment- until the mamma cow decided to take on the now unhorsed cowboy- and got past all of us- as we dodged her nasty mamma attitude!! Her baby followed and they were on the lose again!!
finally after about 2 hours of chasing- and help from another neighbor (Thank you Kay!) They were able to herd the mamma and her baby into one of Kay's pens!
We then helped them load the cows into a trailer and off they went!!
They needed help-- we were happy to help- and it made us feel good the rest of the night!!!
3rd Story --
This morning I was on time- things were going good-- I dropped Porter off to Blaine at 8:00 I'm gonna be on time to work today - hooray!!
As I got to the intersection - there was a car stalled about 100 feet from the light- a fairly new Audi-- the guy was cursing the car- and people were cursing him for delaying their commute-- no one stopped to help-- I turned the corner and stopped at the gas station- I knew I couldn't push him myself- but I would drive if he wanted to push me!!
A man pulled into the gas station just then- I followed him in-- I wanted his help-- but a better opportunity presented-- a client- I knew very well was just paying- I asked him for help-- he was happy to do it!! We ran across the road to the bewildered man-- I told him I'lld rive if you guys push!! and they pushed me through the interesection and into Walgreen's parking lot!! He was happy for the help-- even if it was a workout for him!! and I felt amazing- on a service high!! -- I got to work ontime too-- !!
So I want to continue this week to find ways to serve people-- try it for a week- make sure every day I do something for someone- not expecting anything in return but the good feeling service brings!
You should try it! See how it goes! Let me know what you find out!!
It really is magical!!

Thanks for the challenge. This last weekend, I invited a fellow lady from my ward over to make a craft. I know she has a hard time making friends and is often lonely. It made me feel good because I know it meant a lot to her plus it was super fun and I made a new friend - so it was like selfish service!
yay for getting your good deed for the day in. i'm always mildly surprised when someone does a tiny helpful thing -- even if just holding the door -- since it happens so rarely anymore. (and i love that you included embezzlers in your list of bad people! :)
